We stayed for a long weekend at the Old Post Office Barbon and loved every minute of it. We were surprised at just home homely and cosey it felt while being light, spacious and modern. The main living room, protected from the elements by a separate porch, has a low ceiling and holds a long dining table and comfortable sofas in front of the wood burning stove and large fireplace. A series of side lights provide beautiful ambiance with the option of recessed ceiling lights. Beautifully decorated it is more like someone’s home than a typical holiday cottage. Walking through you enter a large modern kitchen with a massive bespoke window across the whole far wall bringing in tons of natural light. A quality oven, hob, kettle, toaster and fridge are all present and better than ours at home. Several complimentary coffee pods and biscuits enhance the normal tea/coffee/sugar offering. There was also a couple of tablets for the dishwasher. A door in the kitchen takes you back into a utility room with washer/dryer access to the small but usable courtyard with seating and a table. From the kitchen a custom metal spiral staircase (which in all fairness could use some of that grip tape on the edges of each step so you can distinguish them when descending) takes you to the first floor. The first floor houses a very spacious master bedroom with one of the most comfortable beds I’ve had in a holiday cottage, a weighty duvet, and luxurious blackout curtains that my wife was so envious about I can feel a shopping trip in my future. There is a spare socket each side of the bed for a charger or hairdryer. The main bathroom is massive, with a double ended bath and large shower cubical sporting a unique and feature packed shower. A heated illuminated mirror defies condensation and there is a shaver socket on one side. (Note: It is on a separate switch controlled from the landing like the lights and extractor fan.) There was always plenty of hot water from the combi boiler and good pressure. A second bedroom has an ensuite bath and loo but we didn’t use that room so I can’t comment on how comfortable the bed is.
The location of the Old Post Office is very handy for both the South Lakes and Yorkshire Dales. We stopped in Kirby Longsdale at Booths to stock up on some treaty provisions for the weekend, about 11 minutes from the cottage. On the second day we visited Ingleton Falls (19 minutes) which is a beautiful if quite strenuous walk. I’m sure Yorkshire miles are twice the length of Cheashire ones. Hot fish and chips awaits your decent back into the village and there are several small independent shops if you don’t dally looking at the scenery and get down in good time.
Barbon itself only has the one pub. The Church Mouse mentioned in websites and literature seems to have closed as the building is an empty shell. However the pub provided a very warm welcome, especially the resident dog. We ate their twice and enjoyed fantastic venison sausages and wild boar burgers as we were lucky enough to catch the end of game week. We did walk up past the old church to Banneriggs Brow to get a better view of the Great Coum and found a bench dedicated to a former post mistress of the old post office who was there for 30 years up to the 80s.
We’d definitely go back to the Old Post Office Barbon for a longer stay to explore more of the surrounding areas. (Not to be confused with the Old Post Office, Burton In Lonsdale with which Google Maps kept getting confused.)

We love staying at The Old Post Office in Barbon, this idyllically restored, luxury cottage, to relax in, with a modern contemporary feel, spotlessly clean & pet free, Beautifully kept, cosy log burner-fire, comfortable beds, luxury baths & fantastic jet shower, well equipped with everything we needed, the Kitchen Range was a joy for cooking heart healthy breakfasts & dining-in steaks (recommend the local butchers in Kirkby). The cottage is in a delightful location surrounded by superb views an array of nearby countryside walks in Barbondale after a long walk In the hills we enjoy the traditional Barbon Inn for a friendly welcoming drink. The cottage has lots of information on local walks and amenities to explore further the Yorkshire Dales, and a short drive to the quaint Kirkby Lonsdale with fabulous independent shops, The Bathhouse Shop, and Booths grocers. We would definitely recommend The Old Post Office and the hosts returned on four occasions since COVID experiencing the different seasons. Thank you Rob and Elaine for sharing your lovely cottage with us.

We love coming here. It's a lovely, quiet and calm place perfect to get away from it all. It is an old cottage with period features whilst having all mod cons. We've been twice and will come again.

We had an amazing weekend at the Old Post Office Barbon. It is such a wonderful cottage set in such a beautiful location. The cottage itself is spotless and decorated to a very high standard. Also, the beds are so comfy!
Another great feature of this cottage is the pretty garden, which also becomes a bit of a sun trap (when its out).
The Barbon inn is located 30 yards across the road which do great food. There is also a café a very short walk up the road which do lovely breakfast and both places are worth a visit with them being right on the doorstep of the cottage.
Kirkby Lonsdale is also just down the road from the cottage and it has some lovely pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops.
We will definitely be returning here and I would highly recommend this place to anybody!😁😁

I just want to start by saying that we had such a wonderful time staying at the Old Post Office Barbon!! My boyfriend and I stayed at the end of January for a full weekend. The place was absolutely spotless and had a homely but modern interior which far exceeded exceptions - my personal favourite, the log burner fire place! (Which is great for a cosy night in). The bedrooms were stunning, very comfy beds with lots of storage space for your luggage. The kitchen was fully equipped with absolutely everything you could possibly need, with the added bonus of a dishwasher (woo!)
When we arrived, our hosts Rob and Elaine ensured that we were fully equipped - including a fully comprehensive guide to the facilities in the property, as well as the amazing offerings in the local area and beyond.
There are plenty of local walks which are right outside your doorstep, with some great, longer walks for the more keen walkers!
The near by town of Kirkby Lonsdale is less than a 10 minute drive away and has some fantastic amenities. We referred to Rob & Elaines guide to help us find our way around and came across some great shops, cafes and pubs alike.
We would definitely stay here again in the near future, and would recommend to anybody looking for a authentic countryside weekend away. (Wish we could have stayed longer!)

We were looking forward to our return visit to the Old Post Office and we were not disappointed! Everything was pristine, as usual. Had a lovely relaxing break in this fabulous cottage which has been reburfurbished to a very high standard and interior designed with skill and taste.
Barbon is a great location to be based in for a staycation - looking forward to going back again soon!
